Manchester United have officially recalled young midfielder Toby Collyer from his season-long loan at West Bromwich Albion. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder returned to the club’s Carrington training base earlier for treatment on a calf injury. Now, the Red Devils have decided he will not return to The Hawthorns once he recovers.
Collyer joined West Brom in August 2025 seeking regular first-team football in the Championship. He made 12 appearances for the Baggies, accumulating just 253 minutes on the pitch and registering one assist. Injuries disrupted his progress, limiting his impact at the club managed by Ryan Mason.
The England Under-20 international first broke into Manchester United’s senior setup under former manager Erik ten Hag. He debuted in the 2024 Community Shield against Manchester City. Collyer went on to make 13 first-team appearances for United, including substitute outings in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League. Captain Bruno Fernandes praised his performances during that breakthrough period.
Manchester United sent Collyer out on loan to accelerate his development. The club viewed the move as ideal for gaining consistent minutes away from Old Trafford pressure. However, a serious calf injury sidelined him recently. Reports indicate the issue will keep him out for around eight weeks.
Manager Ruben Amorim now faces midfield shortages. Key players like Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo have suffered injuries. Others depart for the African Cup of Nations. Amorim toys with integrating Collyer into the first team upon his return. The youngster could provide valuable depth and competition in the holding role.
