Referee Michael Oliver showed Cristian Romero a straight red card in the 29th minute. The Tottenham captain committed a reckless studs-up challenge on Manchester United midfielder Casemiro. The foul endangered Casemiro and left Tottenham a man down for over an hour.
Romero later apologised to his teammates. Manchester United capitalised on the numerical advantage. In the 38th minute, Bruno Fernandes delivered a low corner. Kobbie Mainoo flicked the ball back from the near post. Bryan Mbeumo swept the ball home through a crowded area to give United the lead.
Manchester United dominated possession after the break. Tottenham defended deeply but struggled to create chances. United maintained pressure and limited Spurs to few opportunities.
Bruno Fernandes added the second goal in the 81st minute. Diogo Dalot crossed from the right. Fernandes prodded the ball in at the back post. The goal marked Fernandes’ 200th contribution in goals or assists for the club in 314 appearances.
The victory kept Manchester United in the Premier League’s top four. Tottenham dropped to 14th in the standings. Thomas Frank’s side faced increased pressure after the defeat. Michael Carrick’s team showed strong form and ended an eight-game winless run against Tottenham.
