Chelsea started the brighter of the two sides at Stamford Bridge. Wesley Fofana headed narrowly over from an early corner. Reece James and Alejandro Garnacho both tested their luck from distance, though neither effort troubled the Newcastle goalkeeper.

The Blues’ clearest opportunity in the opening quarter fell to Cole Palmer. The midfielder exchanged passes with Malo Gusto and broke into the penalty area, but his shot across goal skewed wide of the target.

Newcastle Strike Against the Run of Play

Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 18th minute. Tino Livramento advanced unchecked and slipped a simple through ball to Joe Willock. The midfielder broke clear and squared the ball for Anthony Gordon, who finished with ease to put the visitors ahead.

It was a frustrating goal to concede from a Chelsea perspective, given their early dominance.

Blues Search for Equaliser

Aaron Ramsdale denied Palmer with a fine save from a powerful, curled drive before halftime. Liam Rosenior made an attacking change at the break, introducing Liam Delap for Malo Gusto and pushing James back to right-back.

Delap immediately threatened, forcing Ramsdale into action with a drive from the edge of the box.

Late Pressure Proves Futile

Chelsea continued to press in the final stages. Marc Cucurella turned a devilish James delivery toward Delap, but the striker’s instinctive shot cleared the crossbar. Trevoh Chalobah met another James cross at the back post but could not direct his header on target under pressure from Ramsdale.

In stoppage time, James struck the post with a powerful free-kick from 30 yards. Joao Pedro then headed a Palmer delivery onto the roof of the net in the dying moments.
