FIFA approved the international allegiance switch of Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from England to Nigeria. The decision came through the world governing body change of association platform. Consequently, the 24 year old became eligible to represent the Super Eagles at senior level.
Wrexham Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo Receives Clearance
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo received official clearance from FIFA. The former Arsenal academy product had represented England at youth level up to under 18. Furthermore, he was born in London to Nigerian parents and pursued the switch to play for his ancestral homeland.
Nigeria Football Federation Welcomes The Decision
Nigeria Football Federation director of communications Doctor Ademola Olajire welcomed the move. He said “The NFF is always excited to have another good player committing to Nigeria and providing an option in a particular position.” Additionally, the federation viewed the approval as a timely boost ahead of future qualifiers.
Switch Follows Meeting With National Team Coach
The process gained momentum after a meeting in London between Arthur Okonkwo and Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup tournament. Moreover, Chelle outlined his plans and encouraged the goalkeeper to secure a Nigerian passport. As a result, the paperwork reached FIFA and received approval on April 6 2026.
The clearance added depth to the Super Eagles goalkeeping options. Arthur Okonkwo now joined established keepers Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho. Furthermore, he became available for selection in upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
