Véron Mosengo-Omba, the general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), resigned from his position on March 29, 2026. The Swiss-Congolese official had served as the deputy head of African soccer’s governing body for five years since 2021. He left his previous role at FIFA to take over the CAF position. Mosengo-Omba is a university friend of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who followed him from UEFA to FIFA in 2016.

Statement on Resignation

Mosengo-Omba announced his departure in a statement published on social media from Cairo, Egypt. He stated he was stepping down “to devote myself to more personal projects.” Additionally, he said: “Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever.”

Context of Investigations

The resignation came after CAF announced in January 2025 that the Swiss Public Prosecutor’s Office had decided to stop investigations against Mosengo-Omba. The office found no facts or legal basis to initiate legal proceedings after he faced allegations of financial wrongdoing.

The Nigerian Football Federation announced that Samson Adamu would take over as acting general secretary. CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed this transition after the body’s executive committee met in Cairo.
