Turkish club Besiktas granted Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi compassionate leave to travel to Nigeria for his father’s funeral. Ndidi’s father, Sunday Ndidi, died in a fatal road accident on January 27, 2026, in Umunede, Delta State.

Father’s Death Shocked Football Community

Sunday Ndidi lost his life in a traffic accident shortly after his son helped Nigeria secure third place at the Africa Cup of Nations. Besiktas released a statement on the day of the incident. The club expressed deep sadness over the tragic passing of Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father in a fatal traffic accident. The Nigeria Football Federation also sent condolences to the family.

Club Supported Ndidi During Difficult Time

Besiktas showed solidarity with their player after the loss. The Istanbul-based side honored Sunday Ndidi with a pre-match tribute. Ndidi returned to training and played limited minutes in subsequent matches. However, the club approved time off for family obligations as burial arrangements progressed.

Burial Scheduled in Delta State

Family sources announced burial plans shortly after the death. The interment took place on February 12, 2026, in Umunede, Delta State. Ndidi secured permission from Besiktas to travel to Nigeria on February 10, 2026, ahead of the ceremony.

Wilfred Ndidi transferred to Besiktas from Leicester City in the summer of 2025 for around £10 million. The 29-year-old midfielder served as Super Eagles captain and brought experience from his Premier League and FA Cup-winning days. His current club supported him fully during the bereavement period.
