Nigeria defeated Iran 2-1 on Friday in an international friendly match at Corendon Airlines Park. The Super Eagles claimed victory through early goals from Moses Simon and Akor Adams, while Mehdi Taremi scored a consolation goal for Iran.
Early Dominance from Nigeria
Moses Simon opened the scoring in the sixth minute. The winger cut in from the left wing before firing a low shot past Alireza Beiranvand, Iran’s experienced goalkeeper. This early strike gave Nigeria a commanding position in the opening stages of the match.
Furthermore, the Super Eagles maintained control throughout the first half. They pressed high and cut off Iran’s passing lanes, preventing Team Melli from establishing their rhythm. Iran struggled to create clear chances and appeared slow and erratic in their build-up play.
Adams Extends the Lead
Akor Adams doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 51st minute. The Sevilla striker kept his cool to lift the ball over the onrushing Beiranvand after Ademola Lookman played him through on goal. This goal came shortly after halftime and put Nigeria in a comfortable position.
The match took place largely behind closed doors at the home of Turkish Super Lig side Antalyaspor. Eric Chelle, Nigeria’s head coach, fielded a strong lineup despite the absence of Victor Osimhen, who missed the match due to injury.
Iran Fights Back
Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran in the 67th minute. The Olympiacos striker turned home from close range following a defensive scramble at a corner kick. This goal energized the handful of Iran-supporting spectators present at the stadium.
However, Iran could not find an equalizer despite making four substitutions in an attempt to change the dynamic of the match. The team lacked coordination and concentration, particularly at key moments in both halves. Nigeria will face Jordan in another friendly on March 31 in Amman.
