Nigeria’s dreams of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup shattered on November 16, 2025, as DR Congo triumphed 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the CAF playoff final at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco. The Super Eagles dominated early but crumbled under pressure, missing out on the inter-confederation playoffs and extending their World Cup absence to back-to-back tournaments.

Nigeria struck first in the third minute. Frank Onyeka unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box after a cleared cross fell kindly. The ball deflected off a DR Congo defender and nestled into the net, igniting hope among the traveling fans.

DR Congo responded forcefully. They pressed high and equalized in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot home calmly. The Leopards grew in confidence, controlling possession and creating chances.

The second half saw Nigeria push for a winner. Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon threatened on the wings, but DR Congo’s defense held firm. Extra time brought exhaustion. Tolu Arokodare headed over a golden opportunity, while Stanley Nwabali denied Chancel Mbemba late on.

Penalties decided the fate. DR Congo introduced substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu just before the shootout. He saved crucial spot-kicks, including one from Semi Ajayi. Captain Chancel Mbemba stepped up and buried the decisive penalty, sending the Leopards into ecstasy.

Nigeria converted only three of their attempts. Akor Adams scored to keep hopes alive momentarily, but misses proved costly. DR Congo celebrated wildly, advancing to March’s inter-confederation playoffs for a shot at their first World Cup since 1974.

Interim coach Eric Chelle expressed devastation. He confronted DR Congo staff post-match, later alleging unusual tactics during penalties, claims the opponents denied.

Captain William Troost-Ekong called the loss heartbreaking but vowed a bright future. Victor Osimhen’s limited impact highlighted Nigeria’s struggles without their star striker at full fitness.
